Lion Mark Making

This art activity is perfect to encourage children to mark make using paint, in turn strengthening their fine motor skills and pincer grip control preparing for handwriting, control over letter formation and correct pencil grip.

To make this lion craft all you need is paper, red and yellow paint, a fork and a black pen. Begin by drawing a circle on your paper to make the shape of the lions head, to do this I drew around a mug. Add the detail of the lions eyes, nose and mouth using a black felt tip pen. I would recommend doing this before you add paint to reduce the risk of smudging the mark making.

This is also a great opportunity to explore colour. Ask the children to name the colours of the paint and experiment by mixing red and yellow together to make orange, learning about colour mixing and creating the perfect lion colour! Using the fork to mark make in a relaxed craft environment will also get children used to holding a fork supporting their confidence in using cutlery to feed themselves.

Dip the fork into the paint then press the fork onto the paper to get a spikey affect. Experiment with making different marks using the fork such as pressing it as a print or spreading it across the paper like a paint brush. You can use one colour at a time, mix the colours or over lap them to create a lions mane. Repeat this process around the circle of the lions head until you are happy with the finished lion painting.

This lion mark making painting can be a fun afternoon craft, it can accompany a lion story such as Daniel and the lions den, it can be used as part of an animal theme or even stuck on the front of a homemade card to make it very personal and unique.

I hope you enjoy this lion themed mark making activity!
