Supertato is a great children's book exploring the adventures of vegetables. All of the children I have worked with love the Supertato stories and they really captivate their imagination. I have worked with this theme to include maths learning and development by making Supertato vegetable clip cards.
The idea of the Supertato vegetable clip cards is for the children to count the vegetables on each card and choose which number represents the correct amount by clipping a peg over the number. I have chosen to use the types of vegetables that are with in the story so that the children can see the link and talk about what the different vegetables did in the story. Supporting memory recall and naming of vegetables.
I began this activity by randomly setting out the clip cards and having a pile of pegs that I had taken from the washing line. I then asked the children to pick a card and name the vegetable. Igniting a conversation about the colour of the vegetable, what the vegetable does in the story, whether the vegetable is healthy to eat, if the child enjoys eating the vegetable and which dinners the vegetables are in. This is a great opportunity to make children aware of the importance of healthy eating.
We then went on to count how many vegetables the children can see on the card. Some preschool children could do this independently, however others needed more support so I pointed to each vegetable and counted alongside the children holding up the correct number of fingers as a visual representation.
The children then looked at the list of the three numbers on the clip card and searched for the right number of the vegetables that they had just counted. Putting a peg over the correct number using fine motor skills, improving their dexterity and hand eye coordination as they used the pincer grip to clip the peg.
Once the children worked together to complete every single clip card as an extension we put them in order from 1 to 10 to reinforce counting, number recognition and number ordering, supporting maths learning and development.
If you would like to try this activity I have made the Supertato vegetable clip cards into a PDF file for you to print out and use for free:
Then all you need is pegs from the washing line for the children to clip the over the correct number.
I hope you enjoy this Supertato themed maths activity.
Save this idea for later on my Pinterest
I would love to see photos on Instagram if you use my Supertato vegetable clip cards.
