Lion Yoghurt Pot Puppet Craft

This lion themed craft is super simple, using limited resources and it is great fun to make and play with!

All you need for this craft:
  • Split yogurt pot
  • Yellow poster paint
  • Brown paper
  • Googly eyes
  • PVA glue

Wash up your split yoghurt pot and begin by painting it yellow. While you wait for the paint to dry maybe take this opportunity to look online or in a book to find out more about lions. For example, where they live and what they eat. A great lion themed story to look at is 'Daniel and the lions den' where God protects Daniel from the lions, you could expand this topic and use this craft during a children's ministry lesson.

Continue by challenging children to use their fine motor skills to rip the brown paper into strips which we will use to make a lions mane. Also cut own nose and ear shapes from the brown paper. I would recommend also painting the ears yellow to make them stand out more.

Here is a picture of all of the different components that make up the lion puppet. You can begin to construct the lion by using PVA glue to stick the yellow ears on to the back of the yoghurt pot. Use PVA glue to stick the brown paper mane around the yoghurt pot lions head. I would recommend putting a layer of glue around the back of the yoghurt pot rim and then arrange the brown paper to look like a mane. Finish by sticking on the lions nose and googly eyes.

There are many different ways you can use this craft with in imaginary play. For example you could put on a puppet show, use your lion puppet to tell stories about lions or include it with in a small world animal play set up. All of these ideas encourage children to use their fine motor skills to make the lions mouth move, engage in imaginary play and take on a different role, talking as the lion.

I hope you enjoy making your own lion yoghurt pot puppet!
