I am excited to share with you this weeks sticking cupboard craft resources. All of the resources shown are stored with in our under the stairs craft cupboard for children to use to get creative at any time.
Day 6 of 7 Sunday Sticking Cupboard Sneak Peaks - Coloured paper, wool, embroidery thread, shrinkies and hama beads.
1. Coloured paper and wool - Both coloured paper and wool can be found in craft shops and can be used in so many different ways. Coloured paper can be used to add depth and interest to a picture or collage. We have both plain coloured paper as well as patterned coloured paper which can be added to homemade cards or drawings. Wool is a fantastic tactile material for children to explore and can be transformed into pom poms, made in to friendship bracelets or even used to hang things. I store the coloured paper and wool in bags to make them easy to sort through and move around the house or into the garden to get creative in different areas.
2. Embroidery thread - This can be picked up from a craft shop or ordered online. Embroidery thread is perfect for using to learn how to make different styles of friendship bracelets, there are many different ways of plaiting and using multiple strands of thread to create beautifully intricate bracelet designs to give to friends as gifts. Embroidery thread can also be used to do cross stitch sewing which is a great place to start for a child's first sewing project as its simple to follow the grid layout.
3. Shrinkies - If you have never seen shrinkies I would really recommend ordering some from online or getting them from your local craft shop because they are great fun. They come in loads of different designs such as your child's favourite characters or for older children design your own shrinkies provide the freedom to use your imagination and get creative. The way shrinkies work is you colour in the sheet of characters in the pack or for the design your own shrinkies make up a design on the clear sheet, you could even draw it on paper first then trace over it using the clear shrinkie sheet. Cut out your drawing and then put them in the oven. It is fascinating to watch your decorated shrinkies scrunch up into a ball with the heat of the oven and then eventually flatten out into a tiny solid version of your drawing. Place the shrinkies into a book to flatten out and cool down. Then they can be made into key rings or small gifts.
4. Hama beads - This is a great craft activity to promote fine motor skill development. The idea is for the children to pick up the hama beads and place them on to the points of the hama bead board to create either a pattern or a design. You can use premade boards that are in shapes or animal silhouettes or use the squares to have the freedom to make your own design. Once you are happy with your hama bead design cover it in baking parchment paper and iron to melt the hama beads together, removing it from he board to cool. The beads will then be stuck together and can be used as a coaster of stuck on a card to make a lovely design. You can get hama beads from online, craft shops or ikea.
