Painting Creation Children's Ministry

Creation is an amazing story with in the bible that can be explored in many different ways. I put together a painting activity themed around creation. Once we read the creation story from the children's bible we used paint to represent the story.

For this painting activity you will need:
  • Coloured paint.
  • Paper plates to put the paint on for an easy clean up.
  • Paintbrushes to add details.
  • Sponge animal shapes.
  • I cut washing up sponges into people and tree shapes to show the other areas of creation.
  • Large pieces of paper for the children to paint on.
  • Old shirts used as aprons to protect the children's clothing.
  • Old table cloths on the floor to protect the carpet.
The idea of this painting activity is for the children to design their own creation adding people, trees and animals like God did in the creation story. The large sheets of paper represent the blank canvas of the world before beautiful colour, people, animals and plants were added.

The children really enjoyed looking at the different shaped sponges and naming the animals, they quickly picked up the concept of dipping the sponge into the paint and printing it on to the paper promoting fine motor skill development, hand eye coordination and dexterity. During this activity the children discussed their favourite animals, the colours of the animals and where the animals live and how wonderful it is that God created all of this. Reinforcing the learning from the creation bible story and linking it to the children's interests. I encouraged the children to use the sponge people to represent their family with in creation to show that everyone is created in Gods image.

The children really enjoyed the freedom of this activity and the ability they had to get creative. Towards the end of the activity the children enjoyed exploring the feeling and texture of the paint using their hands adding their own print on the creation paintings. This also provided a brilliant opportunity to look at colour mixing and how different colours mix together to make new colours. We successfully made purple which the children were really proud of.
