7 Sunday Sticking Cupboard Sneak Peaks - Day 2

Today we will be looking at the second drawer in my sticking cupboard, exploring the different items I have saved, how to get hold of them and creative ideas to use the resources. The sticking cupboard is where we keep all of our craft resources, it is a large set of drawers based in the under the stairs cupboard.

Day 2 of 7 Sunday Sticking Cupboard Sneak Peaks - Craft sets, tinsel, googly eyes, foam shapes, ribbon, pegs, pom poms, lollipop sticks, beads, pipe cleaners and bells.

To go into more detail and break down the different items and add an explanation I have split the drawer into different sections.

1. Making and creating resources - Ribbon from gifts, boxes of chocolates, packaging and items of clothing. Tinsel reduced from a charity shop after Christmas. Beads from old jewellery and different jewellery making kits. Bracelet making kit from a craft set. To keep all of the small parts together I have put them in different bags.

There are many ways that you can use these making and creating resources. Beads can be used to make jewellery maybe matching bracelets for a child and their teddy bear, this would also support fine motor skill development. Ribbons are very useful for different sticking crafts, adding decorations to presents or using to hags things. Exploring tinsel is a fantastic sensory experience especially as children may not be able to play with the Christmas decorations, therefore this alternative provides children with a fun opportunity to explore and add the tinsel to pictures and art work.

2. Craft Kits - Badge making kits from the craft company Baker Ross, photo holders left over from a birthday party craft, china painting from an art kit, wire bracelet making from a gifted craft set, pom pom animal kit from a craft set and a potion making bottle which was previously full of chilli sauce. I find it helpful to break up large art kits and make one craft at a time to spread out the activities and make them last longer. I bag the crafts up with any instructions needed to make it at a later date.

There are many different ways you can use these craft sets. The make your own badges are particularly useful for holiday clubs as an icebreaker activity to get to know the children, they are also a great addition to a dressing up outfit to state who the child is dressed up as. The children can decorate the badges or print out a pre made design to colour in. The photo holders are a brilliant birthday party activity, each child decorates one using paint and stickers and has their photo taken with the child who's birthday it is making a lovely memory for them to take home. China painting is a fun activity to teach children about being delicate, careful and planning a nice design. The wire bracelet kit is always a fun quiet activity for fine motor skill development. The pom pom animal kit is fun to transform pom poms into something cute that can be played with in a small world scenario. Finally, small bottles to make potions in is great fun to support imaginary play this can be done outside with rain water and flowers or in the bath with water and soap.

3. Basic craft resources - Here are a few basic craft resources that can be picked up cheaply at craft shops. I would recommend having all of these as a basis of your craft cupboard to really allow your children to get creative. Including small and large pegs, bells, small and large pompoms, lollipop sticks, foam hands and feet, googly eyes and pipe cleaners.

There's endless craft opportunities using these basic resources. For example the large pegs can be transformed into peg dolls by drawing a face, adding wool hair and a tissue paper dress. Lollipop sticks can be used to make photo frames, shape activities and cross weaving crafts. You can make pipe cleaner people, flowers and animals. Googly eyes and foam hands and feet are a fun addition to a monster or alien picture. Pom poms are a great resource to add texture to a picture or collage and add detail to a crown. Mini pegs are fantastic for fine motor skill activities and bells are a fun addition to Christmas cards.

4. Useful items - Here is a few useful craft resources that you never know when they will come in handy! Tinsel strips can be picked up from the pound shop after christmas. Foam shapes, felt shapes and stickers can be picked up cheaply from any craft shop. Glue dots are from Hobby Craft shop. Bulldog clips and pegs have been collected over the years from stationary shops.

There are many different ways that you can use these useful items. Foam shapes are brilliant to add height to a picture or collage or transform into an animal or flower, supporting use of shapes. Felt shapes can be glued together to add texture to a craft. Tinsel strips can be a fun addition to a Christmas card or base for a play set up. Stickers are good for labelling or marking objects so that children can recognise that it is there's. Glue dots are fantastic to stick different fabrics and textured material down as they stay stuck and can not be seen through like PVA glue or sticky tape can. Bulldog clips and pegs can seem random to add to a sticking cupboard however they can be very useful for promoting fine motor skill development in play set ups like a washing line for dolls clothing.

I hope you enjoy this in site into our sticking cupboard and feel inspired to make your own craft cupboard!
