New Years Drum Craft

To celebrate the start of 2021 the first craft of the year is a new years eve drum. This is a fun, thought provoking and slightly noisy activity to get everyone involved with.

All you need to join in with this craft:

  • 2 paper plates
  • 2 beads
  • wool or string
  • lollipop stick
  • pens
  • sticky tape
  • post it notes
This is a great activity to keep busy on new years eve or any time in January to explore the topic of a new year and what that means to the children.

Begin by using felt tip pens to decorate the paper plates in a new years theme. Writing 2021 and asking the children to recognise the numbers and introduce the new year, encourage the discussion of celebration and why the start of a new year is so exciting.

I used cardboard plates as they are slightly thicker making them last longer and they are easier to draw on. However any left over paper plates from Christmas will work well.

As an extension task for older children challenge them to write on post it notes things that they hope to achieve in 2021, ways they can enjoy the year ahead and positive things that they can do to share Gods love with others this year. These do not necessarily have to be new years resolutions or big commitments just some small positive changes to bring hope and joy to 2021. Fold the notes up and place them in between the 2 paper plates to keep them safe.

Tie the beads on to some wool or string and thread them on to the paper plates ensuring there is enough string so that the beads can reach the centre of the plates to make the best drum noise. Attach the lollipop stick using sticky tape and close the paper plates together, securing them with sticky tape.

Once your new years eve drum is complete use your hands to move it from side to side making a brilliant drum noise to see in the new year with! This can be kept in the role play area for the children to re-enact the new year celebration. Maybe you can keep this craft for the year and next new years eve open it up and read the messages inside and see how you have grown and changed over the year and if you met any of your expectations.

I hope you will enjoy starting the new year with this craft!
