Christmas Children's Ministry

Celebrating Jesus' birth at Christmas with in the church is so fun, especially when you can get the children involved. These faith based activities are aimed at children aged from birth to 5 years old. To explore the Christmas story we begin with a nativity craft.

As the children enter the room I have a table set out with lots of different easily accessible craft resources for the children to get creative with an example of the nativity scene craft.

Resources available:

  • Black card as the base
  • Lollipop sticks to make the stable
  • Shape cut outs of a manager and baby Jesus
  • Angel and star stickers
  • Straw
  • Glue sticks

The way the activity is presented and laid out on the table makes all of the resources easily accessible and available, inspiring creativity with out boundaries.

This open ended craft activity is perfect for little children as it has little structure giving them an idea of how to use the resources but also the freedom to explore, get creative and keep coming back to the table to add more.

The addition of the straw with in this craft is brilliant because it can challenge the childrens scenes and ignite conversations about how Jesus felt lying in a manger full of straw, the different animals in the stable and what they eat and how straw is grown. Immersing children into the Christmas story and leaving room for further leaning opportunities.

Each piece of artwork was unique, reflecting the children's creativity and freedom to explore and learn about the Christmas nativity story.

I told the Christmas story to the children using a small world nativity tuff tray set up. This really engaged the children and allowed them to recreate the story independently as they played with the set up after the group story time.

I hope you will be inspired to share the Christmas story with children you work with!
