Baking gingerbread is a yummy and fun Christmas activity for everyone to enjoy!
There is so much you can do with gingerbread such as making biscuits, gingerbread wreathes or a gingerbread house. Whatever you choose to make using gingerbread I have found the perfect recipe that always works, is simple to follow, makes a good amount of mixture and most importantly tastes amazing!
Recipe by Marry Berry - Best Gingerbread Recipe
This recipe makes the perfect amount of gingerbread to make a gingerbread house and includes step by step instructions. This is a great construction challenge for older children and enables them to feel a great sense of achievement when completing it. This is a gingerbread house I made with my amazing friend using this recipe.
One of the best bits about making a gingerbread house is getting creative with the decorations, using chocolate buttons for roof tiles and sweets to make stain glass windows. Creating an impressive Christmas show stopper to display on the table.
Although this gingerbread recipe follows steps to make a ginger bread house you can alternatively just make the mixture and get creative in how you want to use it such as making gingerbread wreaths.
These gingerbread wreaths make such a sweet homemade Christmas gift. Maybe for friends, family, neighbours or teachers. I presented them in an open wrapped shoe box, making this simple to achieve yet beautiful and effective.
To make a gingerbread wreath cut a circle out of the gingerbread and ice lots of little biscuits, icing them to the gingerbread circle to build up the wreath. This is a great Christmas activity and a personal gift.
This gingerbread recipe is also great to use to make lots of little biscuits, which is perfect for little children to join in with. A top tip when rolling out the gingerbread to prevent it getting stuck to surfaces or the rolling pin, is to sandwich it between two sheets of grease proof paper making rolling out the gingerbread quick, easy and mess free. Then just use cutters to cut out little gingerbread shapes. To add some maths into this Christmas activity get the children to weigh out the ingredients and make a repeating pattern using the cut out gingerbread shapes on the baking tray before cooking them.
Finish by decorating the gingerbread biscuits using water icing and then enjoy eating them as well as sharing some with friends as Christmas gifts. Wrap them in cellophane or tissue paper to make lovely little gifts to share some joy this Christmas.
I hope you will enjoy making some gingerbread at home!
