Make Your Own Shadow Show

Shadow shows are a fun way to explore light, dark, shadow and shape. This is a great at home craft and imaginary storytelling activity to keep children entertained on a rainy day or during lockdown.

All you need for this activity is some toilet roll tubes, cling film, elastic bands, paper and a torch. Begin by cutting out shapes of your choice from some paper. Or alternatively you could use premade foam stickers. Stick a cut out shape or sticker to a square of cling film using sticky tape then secure the cling film to the end of a toilet roll tube using an elastic band. Creating your vey own shadow puppet. Repeat this process to make lots of different shadow shapes.

Shine the torch through the toilet roll tube on to the wall and watch the shape appear. Use the different shadow shapes to tell a story. Work together to take turns to tell the story, watching the story evolve as everyone joins in challenging little imaginations.

Discuss the difference between light and dark and how the shadows are made. To extend this activity you can use your hands to continue the shadow show and reinforce the learning.

I hope you enjoy making your own shadow shows at home!
