Blow Painting

Blow painting is such a wonderful activity to engage children in art and learning. If you have never heard of blow painting, it is the concept of blowing paint through a straw and watching the colours spread and move which is captivating.

All you need for this activity:

  • Straws
  • Paper
  • Cup of water
  • Poster paint or water colour paint
  • Paint brush
This activity works really well with water colour paint because it has a good consistency to spread and move. However, I used poster paint mixed with a small amount of water to create a colourful movable consistency which worked perfectly for this activity.

Use the paint brush to blob a small amount of watered down paint on to the paper. Then take your straw and blow in the direction of the paint to make it spread. I find it easier to stand up and get down to the level of the paper to blow the paint in the direction I want it to go and control the spread of paint. This can be a great learning experience for children as they learn how to blow through a straw and not suck and also how water drops can move and spread.

Watch as the colours mix and change when the paint runs through each other, providing an excellent opportunity to talk about colour mixing and the make up of different colours. I recommend putting a protective cover underneath your painting as the diluted paint is wet and can blead through the paper if its applied excessively.

To extend this activity you could add googly eyes and smiley faces to each paint blob transforming them in to germs which is a very relevant talking topic. Or this is a great activity for a firework celebration as they remind me of fireworks or alternatively this is a great craft to enjoy at any time.

I hope you will enjoy trying out this fun blow painting technique!
