This tissue paper craft is perfect to include children of all ages in one activity, making this a brilliant art and craft activity for the school holidays. All you need for this craft is coloured tissue paper cut into squares, paper, water and a paint brush.
As an addition to this activity you could use a white crayon to write a secret message or draw a picture on to the paper before you cover it in tissue paper as it will reveal itself later. I choose to use water colour paper for this activity as it is more water absorbent making it less likely to gain holes in it, however regular printer paper will work well.
Once you have drawn any details on to your paper using a white crayon you can begin to wet the paper by painting over it with water using a paint brush. This is a great way for children to enjoy painting and practice using a paint brush with the correct grip in a mess free way. It also reduces the risk and worry of younger children eating the paint, providing them with the freedom to explore using a paint brush. Once the paper is wet, layer on the tissue paper squares this could be in a colour ordered pattern or randomly placed, both techniques are effective. Finish by painting another layer of water on top of the tissue paper before leaving to dry.
When the tissue paper is dry you can then peel it off of the paper, this is a great way for children to strengthen their fine motor skills and improve dexterity. As the tissue paper is removed the children can observe the change in the paper underneath and how the colours have mixed and dyed the paper. If you added drawings or a secret message using a white crayon at the begin it will now appear which the children find really magical and special to see. I drew a flower and leaves as my secret message which only shows up faintly, therefore make sure you apply the crayon thickly so that it shows through. I really like the pastel colour and the outcome of this craft especially as it is simple and easily achievable for all ages.
I hope you enjoy joining in with making some tissue paper art!
