Making your own binoculars is such a fun craft with endless play and learning opportunities attached.
To make this craft all you need is:
- 2 toilet roll tubes
- Sticky tape
- String
- Paper, pens, paint or stickers to decorate
Begin by sticking the toilet roll tubes together and attaching string so that the children can carry their binoculars around their neck. Provide the children with the freedom to get creative and decorate their own binoculars using paper, pens, stickers or even paint. I choose to make my binoculars with a camouflage theme, drawing a pattern on to green paper.
There are so many ways you can expand this craft into play and learning opportunities:
- Go for a nature walk and challenge the children to tick off from a list what they see through the binoculars e.g. pink flower, oak tree, acorn. The list could include words and pictures to make it accessible for all ages.
- Add the binoculars to a small world safari set up, encouraging the children to look for and name the different animals.
- Use the binoculars to go on a scavenger hunt looking for colours, shapes, numbers or letters.
- Go on a bear hunt, following the story in role play and using the binoculars to hunt for the bear.
- Explore your home, garden, park or nursery using the binoculars, incorporating them into routines such as at tidy up time challenge the children to use their binoculars to find and put away all the yellow toys or all the Duplo pieces.
These ideas can transform a simple budget friendly craft into a day of exploring, hunting, imaginary play and learning.
I hope you enjoy making your own binoculars!
