Family game leader boards are a fun way to engage all members of your family with board games (both adults and children of all ages). To start a game leader board you just need a large piece of paper with a grid drawn on to track the number of wins of each family member. We also like to write down the names of the games we have played to see who is the best at each game and which games we play and enjoy the most.
Begin by setting a start and end date of your family game leader board and aim to play at least one game as a family each night during that time. For example, we have previously set up family game leader boards when on holiday and during the summer or Christmas school break, most recently we had a family game leader board during the coronavirus lockdown. The game leader board encourages the family to spend time together everyday doing something fun and competitive, helping with bonding and family dynamics.
We keep the family game leader board stuck up on the inside of a cupboard as a visual reminder to play games and spend family time together as well as enabling everyone to see who is winning, encouraging friendly rivalry.
There is only one rule to our family game leader board which is that the win only gets written down if all members of the family are playing. This is a great rule to get everyone involved and limit excuses of not joining in as everyone wants to improve their score.
During our most recent family game leader board we have put together a list of our favourite family games to share with you all. I would recommend looking in charity shops to discover new games cheaply or alternatively search for them online, being mindful of the age of your children and their capabilities when looking at new games to add to your collection.
Some of our favourite games are:
- Uno and uno flip
- Dobble
- Left, right, centre
- Ratuki
- Qwirkle
- Sorry
- Staying alive
- Beetle drive
- Wii sports
- Lego games
- Flownders
- Articulate
- Happy families
- Rummikub
- Pass the bomb
- Monopoly (we play this over several nights setting a half an hour timer each evening)
- Top trumps
Once you have completed your family leader board add up the scores and select some fun prizes. Over the years we have had many different prizes from the first shower in our new bathroom, a light up unicorn as a joke, big bars of chocolate and this time we had giant cookies with our place in the leader board iced on. The giant cookies were in front of our places at the dinner table when we had a special end of the family game leader board meal. This made it really fun and special, something that everyone enjoyed being a part of, bringing the family closer and making a memorable event.
I hope this has inspired you to make your own family game leader board!
