Bumble Bee Craft

Bumble bees are such a lovely animal that can be simply transformed in to a craft activity for all ages to enjoy. This craft includes cutting out, gluing and sticking as well as weaving, all of which promotes lots of different learning and development opportunities.

To make this super cute bumble bee craft you will need:
  • Cardboard cut into an oval, I cut this out of an old shoe box.
  • Yellow and black wool.
  • Wings cut out from a newspaper.
  • Yellow lollipop stick.
  • Googly eyes.

I would recommend cutting small slits around the cardboard oval which will make up the bumble bees body. This will hold the wool in place making it easier for the children to weave the wool between the slits.

Begin by weaving the yellow and black wool around the cardboard oval to create an abstract striped bumble bee affect. This does not have to be done perfectly and there is no right or wrong way of doing it, just simply wrap the wool around the carboard one colour at a time holding it in place using the slits previously cut. Personally I like the look of the cardboard underneath the wrapped wool because it gives the bumble bee depth, however you can experiment with how much or little wool you would like to add to your craft.

Use PVA glue or sticky tape to secure the newspaper wings to the back of the bumble bee so that they are visible from the front of the bumble bee. Add googly eyes to bring life to your bumble bee craft and finish with sticking on a yellow lollipop stick to make your bumble bee into a puppet.

To expand on this craft you can research what a bumble bees job is and how they make honey transforming this fun craft into a topic, theme or an interesting project. The fact that this craft is a puppet provides lots of lovely play opportunities such as a prop for a bumble bee story, a fun imaginary play prompt or an invitation to put on a puppet show.

I hope you enjoy making this bumble bee craft and that it will bring joy to your day!
