This fun turtle craft is perfect for a quiet afternoon activity building on fine motor skill development, hand eye coordination, dexterity and concentration. All you need to make your own turtle craft is wool and lollipop sticks.
Begin by laying out your 3 lollipop sticks in a star shape. To secure this to make it easier for little ones to hold with out the lollipop sticks slipping you could use glue dots or a small roll of sticky table to hold the lollipop sticks in shape. To encourage independent decision making and colour recognition the children can choose the coloured wool they want to make their turtle from. I would recommend only using 4 or less colours other wise the colours can over lab and lose the over all colourful effect.
Start by wrapping your first coloured wool around the opposite points through the middle to create the centre of the turtle. Tie this off by looping it through the wrapped section and tying a knot. Continue by weaving the second colour of wool around the points of the lollipop sticks. Do not wrap it through the middle as you will cover over your first colour of wool and create a ball. Repeat this with all of the colours of wool. Do not go right to the edges as you will want to leave room for extra details to transform this weaving craft into a turtle.
There is no right or wrong way to complete a weaving activity, teaching children to be creative. In turn strengthening their fine motor skills as they get into the rhythm and find the pattern of weaving. Finish your turtle craft by adding small details using a black felt tip pen, draw a smiley face on the end of one lollipop stick and little toes on the end of 4 lollipop sticks creating your turtle craft.
Once you have completed your turtle craft you can use it with in an under water play set up, as a story telling prop or as a prop when singing the tiny turtle song.
I hope you enjoy making this turtle craft at home!
