The parable of the lost son with in the bible is a great story to remind us that God's love has no limits and he will always welcome us back to him with open arms. To tell this story I read from the children's bible and looked at the pictures with the children. At the end of the story the son returns home and his father welcomes him back and they have a party, this led nicely onto our next activity.
To transport the children into the bible story and help them experience the fun and joy of the party when the son returned home and teach them about the joy God feels when they turn to him, we threw our own party! To prepare for the party the children made their own party hats.
To make the party hats all you need is:
- Strips of card stapled together which can then be measured around the child's head when completed.
- Feathers and glue to decorate.
- Stickers.
- Crayons to add extra details.
I set this craft up as a child initiated activity, giving the children the freedom to independently get creative with the resources available and make their own unique party hat.
Once the children finished making their party hats we played some party music, played with balloons and party blowers and ate party food. Consider children's allergies when providing food and always check with parents first. At our party we had party rings and hula hoops.
We also played some fun party games such as:
- Musical statues
- Musical bumps
- Keep the balloon in the air
- Sleeping bunnies
- Pass the parcel
- Duck, duck, goose
- What's the time Mr Wolf
I think that preparing and having a party as demonstrated with in the lost son story is a great way to support the children's understanding of the story and get them involved.
