Mess Free Sensory Table

Everyone loves sensory play but it can sometimes come with a massive mess and a time consuming clean up. I have eliminated this with a fun mess free sensory table.

All you need:
  • Shaving foam
  • Cling film
  • Table or tray
  • Optional paint and play resources
To put together your mess free sensory table all you need to do is squeeze shaving foam all over the table or tray. You could add paint to include a colour and another aspect to the activity. Then cover the tray or table in cling film to seal the mess but still enjoy exploring.

There are many different ways you can use a mess free sensory table:

  1. Put a different coloured paint at either end of the table such as yellow at one end and red at the other. Challenging the children to use their hands to move the paint together and mix the colours to create orange in the middle. The addition of the shaving foam will make it easy for the paint to move and mix. Allowing the children to explore how colours are made.
  2. Use the sensory table as a base for a play set up, for example my sensory table looks like a snow scene. Add small world people or animals and blocks to build towers, a house or a farm allowing the children to create their own imaginative play set up.
  3. Use small world cars to mark make in the shaving foam and see the tyre tracks. I would recommend putting 2 layers of cling film on if you plan to do this as it can sometimes rip. If it does just patch up that area and carry on!
  4. Alternatively, use the mess free sensory table as more of an educational fun learning tool for older children. Challenge them to write letters, numbers, words or their name in the shaving foam using their finger then rub your hand over it and start again. Great fun for learning letter formation with in a fun sensory activity.
  5. Finally, this activity ultimately focuses on sensory play and providing children with a fantastic opportunity to explore the senses of the shaving foam using their hands.

I hope you feel inspired by this mess free sensory table idea! I would love to know any more ideas you have to use this sensory play set up and learning resource.
