Noah's Ark Children's Ministry

Noah's Ark is a well known bible story that teaches children that God keeps his promises. I have put together different crafts and activities to support this learning.

When the children arrived we immediately all sat down at the craft table together and made rainbows using:
  •  Half a paper plate.
  •  Cotton wool balls to stick on to the paper plate.
  •  Coloured strips of paper to stick hanging along the flat side of the plate.
  •  Coloured crayons for extra decoration.
  •  Glue sticks.
This was a fun craft that all ages enjoyed participating in. We looked at and named the different colours the children had chosen to add to their rainbows supporting maths colour recognition. The children also explored the fluffy texture of the cotton wool balls and developed their fine motor skills when using the glue stick. The older children were also able to listen and follow a sequence of instructions to complete the craft.

We all sat together to complete the craft which provided a perfect opportunity for group discussion about the story of Noah's Ark and what the children already know. We also explored the concept of keeping promises and I challenged the children to think of a time where they have kept a promise.

I then told the story of Noah's Ark using a story box which contained:
  •  A small world boat.
  •  Playmobil man (Noah).
  •  Dove Christmas tree decoration.
  •  One of the children's rainbow craft.
  •  Rain maker.
  •  Children's bible.
I told the story by reading the bible and taking the props out of the box during the appropriate times and asking the children to hold them or make the sound or rain using the rain maker to include them in the storytelling.

I set up a small world play area using the Noah's Ark boats and animals as well as the rainbow on a blue blanket to feel like the sea. I then challenged the children to pair the animals before the flood comes and get them safely inside the ark. The children really enjoyed this imaginary play, getting involved and expanding the play by acting out their own version of Noah's Ark using the small world animals. The children also named the different animals and counted them. For older children this could be a perfect opportunity to introduce the 2 times table and count the animals in 2's.

To end the Noah's Ark activities the children worked together to complete a huge floor puzzle of a world map, showing where all the different animals live. This ignited lots of conversations and expanded the children's knowledge.
