Back in February I attended the Nursery World Show which provided me with plenty of inspiration to improve activities, resources and set up. Nursery World is an amazing organisation that provides loads of information on current early years practice through magazines, websites and events.
During the Nursery World Show I loved seeing all of the different activities and resources set up. Inspiring me to improve the way I present activities to make them engaging and provide an exciting invitation to play and explore.
I really like the way that these 2 activity set ups use numbers and number resources for learning and play. Encouraging children to see and play with numbers in their environment, in turn supporting number recognition, counting, using number names in play, representing numbers and writing numbers.
This dark tent is a fantastic reminder of the benifits of having a sensory space for children to escape and relax. Dark tents are an amazing resource to block out the bright busyness of the room which is particularly useful for children with Autism to escape to and relax if they become overwhelmed. Having glow in the dark objects can provide a great focus with in the dark tent and stimulate sences. Dark tents are an excellent alternative to sensory rooms if you do not have the space to dedicate a whole room to sensory discovery, because this is an important aspect of children's learning and development.
These set ups fantastically demonstrate that sensory play can be represented in different forms. The typical messy play set up is what is generally thought of when planning sensory play activities. However, sensory play can be equally beneficial in a mess free form when the children have access to different materials and textures such as mirrored blocks and fluffy rugs. Both forms of sensory play hugely benefit the children's learning and development and encourage sensory exploration.
I was also reminded of the learning opportunities from wooden toys and resources. In particularly, how sustainable and long lasting they can be. Some people think of wooden toys as being old fashioned and out dated, however this demonstrated how modern and popular they are currently as well as how the appearance of wooden toys look interesting and engage children in play.
I hope this has inspired you as much as it inspired me!
