Decorating Rocks

Decorating rocks is a really fun activity to share your creativity with others. It is so simple yet fun and the decorated rocks can be used in many different ways.

Decorating rocks can be a brilliant activity for both adults and children to get involved. It is great fun choosing the rocks and then taking them home to decorate and use for another purpose. Children can explore their creativity when designing the picture they plan to draw on to the rocks. You can explore the different size, shape and texture of the rocks and discus with the children what the shape reminds them of, for example one of my rocks reminded me on the shape of the Star Wars character Yoda so that was what I transfored the rock into.

To decorate rocks you could use paint however I found that sharpie pens worked effectivly and to ensure the drawings stayed on and to give the rock a glossy effect I covered them in a decoupage glue or alternatively you could use watered down PVA glue.

Decorating rocks is a fantastic opportunity to improve children's fine motor skill development as they pick up the different rocks using a whole hand palmar grip. Also using a pincer grip to draw on the small rocks in a controlled manor.

There are many different meaningful ways you can use decorated rocks, for example:
  1. Hiding them around your family home and garden.
  2. Writing numbers or letters on the rocks and using them for learning and with in an educational play set up.
  3. Start a community project by hiding rocks around your town to bring joy to other peoples day. Remember to write the Facebook page on the back of the rock so those who find it can then post a picture on to the towns Facebook page with a clue and rehide the rock for someone else to find. Bringing the community together, encouraging everyone to get outside and go for walks whilst rock hunting and contribute by decorating and hiding their own rocks.
  4. Start a snake of rocks going up your road and invite everyone who walks past to add a rock to the end of the snake and see how long it gets.
  5. Leave decorated rocks on friends and families door steps as gifts of encouragement during lockdown.

Here are some beautifully decorated rocks I have found around my town, sharing photos and clues on to the Facebook page for others to find and enjoy.
