5 Days Of Fathers Day Craft And Homemade Gift Ideas

During the run up to fathers day this week, I have put together 5 craft and homemade gift ideas for children to have fun making each day to show their Dad's how special and loved they are.

1. Reasons why I love you jar

This homemade gift idea is so easy to put together yet so personal and something that all Dad's will keep for many years. All you need is a jar and some small squares of coloured paper, you could even use coloured post it notes for this.

Then older children can independently write as many reasons as possible about why they love their Dad. Or an adult can write this out for younger children and they can draw pictures to go with the writing. This gift is so personal and makes the children really think about what their Dad does for them everyday providing them with an opportunity to recognise this and thank their Dad, promoting kindness and thoughtfulness.

The children can then fold all of their reasons why I love you notes and put them in a jar, this promotes fine motor skill development. The children could then decorate the jar with stickers, draw on it with sharpies or glass pens and tie on a ribbon with a label explaining what is in the jar. This is a lovely thought provoking activity as well as a meaningful gift that the children and their Dad can look through together.

2. Best Dad trophy card

This fathers day card idea is a brilliant craft to show Dad's how much they mean to their children. All you need is a piece of card, some coloured paper of your choice, a glue stick and coloured pens.

Begin by folding the card in half and drawing a trophy shape for the children to cut out. Make sure it reaches the edge of the card so you do not accidently cut the card in half. Use the excess card to make handles.

Stick the handles on to the trophy and draw a number 1, a circle, 2 stipes and a rectangle with 'Best Dad' written on for older children to practice their cutting skills and cut the shapes out. The children can choose whatever coloured paper they would like, you could even use wrapping paper or magazine cut outs if you do not have coloured paper.

The children can then use a glue stick to stick all of the shapes in the correct places following my example or design their own trophy. They children could add extra detail with stickers and coloured pencils making it unique and personal to their Dad.

3. Rocket fathers day card

This rocket fathers day card is a fun craft to make and provides different learning opportunities. All you need is a card, coloured paper of your choices, coloured pens, a glue stick and some wool or ribbon.

Begin by drawing 3 triangles and 2 circles out on a coloured paper of your children's choice and challenging older children to cut them out. You can talk about the different sizes and colours of the shapes, introducing some relaxed maths learning and development. Cut out a large rectangle from another coloured paper and fold it in half. Make 3 holes along the shortest side of the folded rectangle and the children can tie some wool, ribbon or string of their choice on, supporting fine motor skill development and decision making.

The children can then use the shapes to make a rocket and stick it to the card. Make sure you only stick half of the large rectangle down to make it into a flap, adding an extra detail to the card. The children can personalise their creation using coloured pens and star stickers.

The children can add a secret message to their Dad in the flap on the rocket. I chose to keep with in the space theme and wrote 'I love you to the moon and back'.

4. Decorated mug and small gift

A great homemade gift that Dad's can keep forever and use everyday is a mug decorated by their children. You can easily pick up a plain white mug from most supermarkets or home stores and as a fun activity your child can decorate it using ceramic pens or paint.

To transform this craft into a gift fill the decorated mug with small treats of the children's choice that they think their Dad will like. You could stick to a colour theme, I have chosen purple. However, give the children the responsibility to decide.

My decorated mug gift contains small treats such as:
  •  Flavoured tea bags
  •  Twirl chocolate bar
  •  Wispa chocolate bar
  •  Cadburys hot chocolate
  •  CafĂ© express drinking choclate

5. Superhero Dad craft

This superhero Dad craft is inspired by superman is perfect for superhero Dad's and helping children to tell their Dad's how much they mean to them. All you need is coloured card and paper, coloured pens and a glue stick.

Begin by drawing a superman logo shape on card and writing 'Dad' in the middle then cutting it out. This can be tricky to make sure the letters reach the edges therefore I would recommend for this to be done by an adult. The children can chose the colour of card this is done on and can decorate it using coloured pens. I have outlined the logo in yellow but you could draw stripes, spots or colour it in.

Draw around the logo shape on coloured card and challenge the children to rip coloured paper of their choice and glue it with in the lines. I themed the colours chosen around superman colours however your children can make this unique to their Dad.

Stick the cut out logo over the red paper and finish by writing a message such as 'you're my hero'. You can make this craft more personal by adding extra decoration of your children's choice.

To finish this craft the children can have a think and write about why their Dad is a superhero, making this craft so thoughtful and personal. Helping children to recognise what their Dad does for them everyday.

I hope you enjoy all of these fathers day craft and homemade gift ideas!
