Birthday cakes are a great way to theme a children's party and a fantastic table centre piece. I have made many different children's birthday cakes linking to favourite animals or books.
The Very Hungry Caterpillar Birthday Cake
I made this hungry caterpillar cake for a 1st birthday party. It was a great table piece and an easy theme to follow for the rest of the party. The children could easily help themselves to the cupcakes, encouraging independence. This cake is made up of 23 cupcakes decorated in green buttercream icing and a Victoria sponge cake covered in red fondant icing. I made a board to create the cake into a centre piece using shades of green paper and PVA glue to cover a piece of cardboard and I added pictures of the hungry caterpillar foods to carry on with the theme. With the design of this cake the children could take home cupcakes in their party bags and the family can enjoy the red Victoria sponge cake, making the cakes purposeful and last longer.
Lion Birthday Cake
I made this lion birthday cake for a 2 year old. It is simple to make, effective and tastes great! I made 2 circle chocolate cakes sandwiched together with orange buttercream, chocolate flakes to shape a lion mane, chocolate button eyes, orange segment ears and black icing to add a nose, mouth and whiskers.
The Gruffalo Birthday Cake
I made this Gruffalo birthday cake for a 2nd birthday party. It is made up of circle chocolate cakes cut to make the Gruffalo's ears and face, covered in chocolate buttercream icing with coloured fondant icing for features. I made a cake board to create a centre piece, covering cardboard in green paper using PVA glue and sticking on Gruffalo pictures to tie in with the theme. This was a fantastic show stopper cake which everyone loved! The Gruffalo is a great theme to also carry on through out the party which all children enjoy.
Rabbit Birthday Cake
I made this rabbit birthday cake for a 3 year old. It is really effective and enjoyed by everyone! This rabbit cake is made up of Victoria sponge cakes cut to form the rabbits face and ears, covered in pink buttercream icing piped in peaks with sweets to make the facial features. I made a cake board to display the cake as a centre piece, to make this I covered cardboard from an old box in pink paper using PVA glue to give it a glossy effect and adding hand drawn details and the child's name to personalise it. The cake board can be kept as a memory board after the cake has been eaten by attaching photos from the party to it.
