Toilet Roll Tube Bugs

This is a simple and fun craft activity to try at home with very little resources, planning or preparation needed.

All you need:

  • A toilet roll tube
  • Coloured wool
  • Scissors
  • Sticky tape/PVA glue
  • Googly eyes
  • Coloured paper
  • Pipe cleaners
Begin by going on a bug hunt in the garden or looking in books or online to get ideas about the colouring of different bugs and what they look like. This could inspire you to create a specific bug for example, you could make a red ladybird or an orange butterfly or alternatively get creative and make your very own bug using lots of different colours.

Wrap your toilet roll tube in lots of different coloured wool securing it at the bottom of the toilet roll tube with a strip of sticky tape or a dot of PVA glue. This is a great challenge for little fine motor skills. The wrapped toilet roll tubes makes the base of your bugs body.

Bend the pipe cleaners to make legs and feet for your bug. Talk about how many legs your bug is going to have, is it a spider with 8 legs or a grass hopper with 6 legs. Secure the pipe cleaner legs to the bottom of the toilet roll tube with sticky tape.

Cut out some wings from coloured paper or if the bug you are creating does not have wings get creative with making different features to bring your bug to life. The addition of googly eyes really adds character to your creepy crawly craft. Add this craft to a bug themed tuff tray or imaginative play set up to encourage further play and learning. Maybe also learn some fun facts about bugs to share with your friends. This is a great topic to look at during home learning!

I hope you will enjoy making your very own toilet roll tube bugs!
