The Very Hungry Caterpillar Puppets

The Very Hungry Caterpillar is a great story to share with children and tell in a unique way by using homemade storytelling puppets.

All you need to make these caterpillar and butterfly story puppets is different coloured paper, a glue stick and scissors. Begin by cutting out the different shapes needed, copying my example above. To make the hungry caterpillar circles I drew and a cup. Then stick the different pieces of coloured paper together to look like the characters in the story. Don't worry if you do not have the exact colours of the paper, feel free to experiment with using different colours, painting the colours on or using textured paper which could add a lovely sensory aspect to this activity. Cut two holes at the base of the caterpillar and the butterfly for the children to use as puppets. I would recommend either laminating or at least backing the puppets with card from a cereal box to ensure they can be played with and enjoyed for a long time.

To use your hungry caterpillar puppets read the story to the children and as you read a child chosen to be the special helper can use the caterpillar puppet and make it eat the different foods from the book. Or to expand even further you could use plastic play food or print outs of the hungry caterpillar food for the puppets to pretend to eat. At each part of the story the child can act it out using the caterpillar, such as making the caterpillar lie down when he sleeps in the story. At the end when the caterpillar turns into a beautiful butterfly you can hide away the caterpillar puppet and produce the butterfly. This will captivate the children's imagination and bring the story to life for them.

Once you have finished telling the story as a group, maybe leave the book and puppets out for the children to play with, explore and have a go at retelling the story. You could even transform the tuff tray into a hungry caterpillar themed area and expand on this story and look at the topic of the butterflies life cycle which could really engage the children. I would recommend storing the caterpillar and butterfly puppets inside your hungry caterpillar story book for easy access and additional fun when reading the story.

I hope you like these homemade hungry caterpillar puppets!
