A kitchen band is a fantastic idea to make some noise, encourage children to express themselves in different ways as well as providing plenty of lovely learning opportunities. A kitchen band is a free activity using everyday household items found in the kitchen and transforming them into musical instruments.
To make my kitchen band I used:
- Different sized saucepans as drums
- Collinder as a drum
- Wooden spoons as drum sticks
- Saucepan lids as symbols
Get creative and allow your children to empty the kitchen cupboards to put together their very own drum kit using whatever you have at home.
There are many different ways you can use a kitchen band:
1. Put your kitchen band together at home and have fun experimenting with making music and a loud noise.
2. Challenge your children's listening, recall, attention and counting skills by completing a listen and recall activity. Tap out a rhythm or pattern on your kitchen band and get your child to repeat the sounds back to you through drumming. Take turns in leading the rhythm and repeating it back to each other. Or alternatively for younger children count the number of times they tap the kitchen band up to 10 to support counting and listen to the different sounds the varying sizes of saucepans and kitchen equipment make.
3. Try and drum along to music to keep in time with a well known song and begin to follow a rhythm as well as have fun.
Some great songs for children to drum along to are:
- We Will Rock You - Queen
- Best Song Ever - One Direction
- Shake It Off - Taylor Swift
- Maps - Maroon 5
- Seven Nation Army - The White Stripes
- Starlight - Muse
4. All of these ideas can be done over zoom video call to keep grandparents connected with the children, to keep class friends in communication and as a virtually distant activity for clubs to do together with their own kitchen band set ups at home.
I hope you enjoy these kitchen band ideas!
